Case Study – Water Transfer through Customer Infrastructure

Case Study – Water Transfer through Customer Infrastructure

We look back on 2020 and will always think of this past year as the most challenging the Canadian oil and gas industry has ever seen. However, for Fraction Energy Services and our ownership group, Green Energy Services Inc., we have done our best to put the challenges aside and work even harder to ensure we acknowledge and exceed our customers safety and operational expectations.

On one of the most exciting projects completed this year, Fraction Energy Services participated in what may be considered one of the largest frac water supply projects in North America. The project involved pumping nearly 100% recovered and reused frac water from multiple sources through an underground pipeline network to lease with a combined transfer distance of 160km.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

  • Location: Northeast British Columbia, Montney Play
  • Transfer Distance: 160km
  • Pipeline: various diameter of underground pipeline
  • Delivery: up to 9.0m3/min to lease
  • Volume: 200,000m3+
  • Number of Water Sources: 8 – Produced Water and Fresh Water
  • Pumping System: 17 – Centrifugal pumps all equipped with LightspeedTM telemetry including automated water storage tank level control monitors

Operating a pumping system that involved concurrent withdrawals from multiple water sources at variable rates required fantastic pre-planning and cooperation from both the Fraction and Customer Teams. The project highlighted the importance of creating strong business partner relationships when managing logistically complex systems.

Project execution was flawless:

  • Zero incidents
  • Zero spills
  • Zero non-productive time

We can’t say it enough: Great Job Team!!

The Long Distance Frac Supply Program

Fraction Energy Services completed a high rate, long-distance frac supply program in north-central Alberta during Q1 2020. The program consisted of two, back to back water supply projects with the first project operating over a 45km distance.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS
Project #1: 45km
Surface Line: 12” Lay Flat Hose
Delivery: up to 11.5m3
/min to lease
Total Volume: 125,000m3+
Pumping System: 10 – 375HP 8×6 Cornell Pumps
equipped with LightspeedTM automation and telemetry

BENCHMARK
Safe and efficient operation

EXECUTION
LightspeedTM automation allows projects to be completed with a reduced workforce while still maintaining a safe and efficient pumping operation. Each pump in the multi-pump system can be set in auto-mode allowing the project supervisor the ability to monitor and adjust operating set-points for each unit in line and optimize delivery from source to lease.

This contrasts conventional systems where each pump operates as an individual node and relies on individual workers to make manual adjustments based on instructions relayed up and down the line.

PROJECT SAVINGS
On this long line project, we were able to safely reduce our crew by six Water Techs and which in turn reduced the number of crew trucks, associated fuel, and worker LOA. Overall, Fraction was able to achieve 22% savings to the customer in these categories.
